How Our Choices Reflect Our Relationship with Integrity

I take the privilege of choice very seriously.

As a child, I was limited enough in the choices I was allowed to make that it made every decision feel like a luxury.

The ability to choose felt like an opportunity for me to demonstrate that my thoughts were significant enough to give me direction without instruction. A reality that can be difficult to empathize with if you never felt as though your capacity to choose was stifled.

Much of life is governed by cycles, patterns, and instincts. We experience and perpetuate cycles and patterns, but unlike creatures governed by instinct alone, we also have the ability to pause, consider, and be intentional in our response. Rather than be driven by our baser impulses, we can choose to be mindful and conscientious. We can choose to respond with integrity.

Without the right framing, the sea of endless possibilities that extend from our choices can feel daunting at times. We are either very aware of the weight of our choices, or struggle to find the limits of our decision-making.

Often, knowing our limits means finding safety within the relationship between cause and consequence. It is there that we find our centre and grounding.

Freedom without boundaries brings about its own form of chaos.

Boundaries without the freedom to choose disconnect us from our agency.

Choosing to align with our sense of integrity.

It is this sense of accountability—the awareness that the world will respond to the choices we make—that can keep us from falling into reckless or destructive patterns of decision-making.

There is much to consider before we can feel comfortable arriving at a conclusion. Factors that carry different weights. Through life and living, the weight we assign to each consideration continues to shift and change. The easy decisions are few and far between.

As I consider my need for self-expression, I find myself placing less value on the approval and validation of others that once kept me choosing smaller than what I was capable of.

As I consider my need for alignment, I find that I have a growing awareness of the responsibility and accountability that come with choosing, recognizing that even the smallest decision that I make is impacting someone, somewhere, somehow.

Not all of the decisions we make will mean a happy ending. There are choices that close chapters as much as there are choices that open them. We can be held in contempt for deciding the right thing when it is the unpopular position.

Resolve to withstand the resistance that comes with standing your ground comes when your choices are stemming from a place of alignment. It is difficult to maintain your position when it wasn't a position you felt aligned to take. Moving in alignment gives you the strength required to bear the weight of the consequences of your decision-making.

Whether we choose in alignment with our values or allow ourselves to compromise them, there will be consequences. Choosing sets cause and effect into motion. In time, we uncover the effects, the chain of events that transpire from exercising our sense of agency.

If I am to bear the weight and the consequences of my decisions, if I am to witness the impact and the outcome that may or may not translate evenly, or even positively, for all involved, then I must make the choice from a place of integrity. I want to like the person I see at the end of the day. I want to know that I took that responsibility of choosing seriously, and that no matter the reaction, I intentionally chose from a place of integrity. My words and my values aligned. My thoughts and beliefs were represented in my expression, in any of its many forms... as a conscious choice.

I will intentionally choose not to condemn the journey for its difficulties if I know I am continually working to align my decisions with my thoughts, beliefs, and values. I want to look at myself at the end of the day and know that I acted from a place of integrity. I can hold myself to the standard of doing better, committing to making use of the wisdom that comes from life and experience.

Every decision shapes the person we are and the person we will become. Our choices shape the people who exist within the realm of our influence. Whether publicly or privately, our choices are moulding our view of our evolving selves. The power and the privilege of choice can be a luxury that liberates or a prison that holds us hostage. Ultimately, the choice is and has always been yours.
