When Expectations (Should) Change. Lessons on Growth & Self-Discovery

The majority of us have an ideal that we strive towards.

Whether that translates in our social, intellectual, or career pursuits… growth is about bridging the gap between where we are and where we would like to be.

We can sometimes hold so rigidly to an ideal we hold about our lives, we lose sight of the lessons that are comprised in the here and now.

The small signs and signals... that are prompting you to go inwards, to question and to examine.

Especially when we put the spotlight on the standard that we hold ourselves to.

Life is always finding ways to enable us to redefine these personal standards and ideals… enabling our becoming, beyond the constraints of our expectations.

There is nothing more crushing than feeling disappointed in ourselves. Nothing weighs heavier than the thought that we failed to meet the standard that we established for ourselves. Some of us spiral out, rather than think critically about the basis of the standard to begin with.

Find the wisdom buried in disappointment
There are lessons hidden in our disappointments.

For so many of us, we never stop to consider that maybe the problem wasn’t in our failure to meet the standard.

Maybe life is asking you to reflect on what flaws might be inherent in the standards you've established, or more importantly, the flaws in the reasons why we held those standards to begin with.

So much of the redirection that life demands... creates room for this inner reflection.

What is the journey you are currently enduring telling you about the destination?

Progression, especially when it is measured, gives us the time we need to bridge the gap between reality and what we envisioned.

When we take the time that our goals need, avoiding shortcuts and cut corners, the process is its own form of preparation.

Sometimes that preparation will align you to your vision or provide you with the strength you need to reposition and re-pivot.

The standard was never meant to be fixed.

The ideals that we nurture, at some point will take root in our reality or require revision.

Flexibility.

Adaptation.

Recognizing that you were never limited by the standards and expectations that you anchored your self-identity against.

Sometimes life is asking you to think differently, to choose differently, than what you've previously considered.

Non-attachment best serves you when you learn to let yourself off your own hook. Even through challenges and shortfalls, your path is taking shape. Practice presence, let reality play a role in shaping the world within. Not to limit you, but to enable you to push further than you ever would have thought.

There is a line we each learn to dance.

Without losing optimism, and all the while keeping the faith.

Taking circumstance with a grain of salt while allowing our expectations to shift and take shape as we learn, as we grow, and through the hard-won lessons that experience provides.

The truth doesn’t need to be the bitter pill that most think, but, it can be the anchor that aligns you to something better… than you ever thought.

Finding beauty in self-discovery even if it's painful
Try and trust the process...
